The Human Body Is Not A Chargeless Entity
The molecular and cellular effects of PEMF have been extensively studied and documented. At the cellular level, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, also known as "PEMF Therapy" disturbs the cellular membrane and can activate many cellular signaling pathways – these bring about many changes at the molecular, cellular, and eventually physiological levels.
One of the main ways it does this is by forming lipidic nanopores (or little holes in the cell membrane) that act as ion channels that allow for the passage of ions (or charged particles) into and out of the cell. In particular, calcium ions flow into the cell from outside the cell activating many of these signaling pathways.
PEMF can also affect the molecules that make the cell membrane itself: charged phospholipids. This triggers other signaling changes within the cell. These pathways have all been shown to be important for regulating cellular proliferation as well as their plasticity which in a way reflects their youthfulness. PEMF can also inhibit inflammatory molecules also from being produced and this helps maintain health by reducing inflammation.
Most impressive is the effect of PEMF on stem cells. Extensive scientific research has shown that low-frequency PEMF has a positive influence on neuronal (nerve-regenerating) and mesenchymal (blood, bone, muscle regenerating) stem cells. Thus, PEMF finds itself at the forefront of many regenerative therapies.
In fact, the molecular mechanisms by which PEMF can stimulate adult neural stem cell regeneration in the hippocampus (region of the brain that is important for memory) have been dissected out. This enhancement of hippocampal neurogenesis (generation of neurons) and synaptic plasticity (which reflects the capacity of the brain to remain youthful) correlated with an increase in learning and memory in mice.
PEMF therapy has also been shown to promote osteogenesis (bone formation) and cartilage formation and studies have shown that this may be primarily due to the effect on mesenchymal stem cells.
The body is filled with electricity: there are membrane potentials across cell membranes, nerves and muscles fire electric currents with action potentials and the heart is regulated completely by electricity. Thus, it is no surprise that electromagnetic fields have an effect, both beneficial and harmful, to the human body.
While many strong electromagnetic fields such as those caused by our cell phones, our Internet wifi systems, and electric cables often disrupt the body’s electricity; pulsating electromagnetic fields of lower frequencies can be highly beneficial to the system.
The first application of electricity and magnetism as therapy in our modern-day and age came with the discovery that electric currents can heal non-union fractures in the seventies. Dr. Andrew Bassett then proposed to use electromagnetism instead of direct currents for the treatment of non-healing bone fractures and pseudo-arthroses. It was already a known fact that racehorses that were treated with these low-frequency electromagnetic signals did better with respect to speed and endurance.
In 1979, the FDA approved the use of pulsating electromagnetic fields, called pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, for the treatment of non-union and delayed union fractures. Today, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is also known as "PEMF therapy" is approved for the treatment of many conditions including edema, pain, and modulation of muscle tone and spasm.
Why Pulsed Electric Mangetic Field Therapy?
High-frequency pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation allows noninvasive treatment of tissue without heat. In 1979 the FDA approved the use of PEMFs for bone growth stimulation, and afterward, the range of possible applications has been widened. (1)
Electromagnetic stimulation of tissues can be obtained through electrodes directly in contact with the skin or by generators placed near the body. (2)
PEMF stimulation has been studied and proposed for the regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues such as cartilage, bone, tendon, and ligament. Overall, the ultimate mechanism of action of PEMF can be identified by their influence on the ion balance, membrane exchanges at the cellular level, and on adenosine receptors, whose activation produces several anti-inflammatory responses. (2)
In this sense, PEMF has shown improvement in the activities of SOD, catalase, GPx, and GSH, which are components that protect the cell from oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species. (5)
What can PEMF treat?

Benefits of PEMF Therapy For Lyme Disease
In our clinic, we propose that PEMF has many of these health benefits, especially for chronic Lyme Disease patients. When offered in conjunction with other modalities, it can be very useful in promoting the body’s capacity to heal itself.
